Read All About: Fluid Bed Dryers

What is a Fluid Bed Dryer?

A Fluid Bed Dryer is found in batch and continuous processes, using gas or heated air to dry certain products. The equipment effectively forces the products to behave like a fluid as they move through the machine from the feed inlet to an outlet which discharges the dried and finished products. Different zones can allow for heating and cooling as needed, with each zone controlled by the process.

Used equipment can cut costs for companies looking to acquire a fluid bed dryer. Manufacturers can use a fluid bed dryer for an activity like preparing powder, where the device dries and separates the power before cooling it at the end of the process to allow packaging.

The equipment includes a large processing chamber with a perforated plate through which heated air or gas can pass. As products are fed in, they float on the gas, receiving maximum surface contact with the heat so they dry quickly and evenly. Some machines also have heater bars to increase the temperature and speed the process still further. Materials in the fluid bed dryer behave similar to a boiling liquid, bubbling along the length of the chamber until they reach the far side, where they can be discharged.
The product flows across a perforated bed while hot air blows through the bed. Continuous dryers vibrate to move the product while batch dryers use agitators. Production is measured typically in Kg/Hr.

Read All About: Heat Exchangers

What is a Heat Exchanger?

A Heat Exchanger is a piece of equipment built for efficient heat transfer from one medium to another. Heat Exchangers are used for the transfer of heat or cold between two fluids for the purpose of heating the process, cooling the process or condensing vapours during the process. Heat Exchangers can also be known as Condensers, are pressure and temperature rated and can be horizontally or vertically orientated. They are widely used in space heatingrefrigerationair conditioningpower plantschemical plantspetrochemical plantspetroleum refineriesnatural gas processing, and sewage treatment. The classic example of a Heat Exchanger is found in an internal combustion engine in which a circulating fluid known as engine coolant flows through radiator coils and air flows past the coils, which cools the coolant and heats the incoming air.

There are several different types of Heat Exchangers in the process industry. These include: shell and tube, plate, spiral and air cooled and compoblock Heat Exchangers. A shell and tube Heat Exchanger has an external cylinder called a shell with internal tubes that run the length of the shell. There are tube sheets on each end of the tubes sealing the shell around the tubes and there are covers on each end called heads which can come in several configurations. Basic principal of operation is that one fluid flows through the tube and the other fluid flows around the tubes; the large number of tubes in the bundles offer extensive contact surfaces which facilitate quick and efficient thermal transfer. The fluid inside the tubes can flow in a single pass or multiple passes using baffles in the heads. Another type of heat exchanger is the plate Heat Exchanger. One is composed of multiple, thin, slightly separated plates that have very large surface areas and fluid flow passages for heat transfer. This stacked-plate arrangement can be more effective, in a given space, than the shell and tube Heat Exchanger.

There are three primary flow arrangements with Heat Exchangers: counter-flow, parallel-flow, and cross-flow. In the counter-flow exchanger, the fluids enter the exchanger from opposite sides. This is the most efficient design because it transfers the greatest amount of heat. In the parallel-flow version, the fluids come in from the same end and move parallel to each other as they flow to the other side. The cross-flow Heat Exchanger moves the fluids in a perpendicular fashion.

Global Presence, Local Support: Mitigating the risks of buying used equipment

Chemical and Pharmaceutical manufacturers often justify the purchase of used equipment for their operations on the basis of lower prices and faster delivery. These reasons are not a secret. Used process equipment can usually be purchased at prices that are up to 70% cheaper than new equipment. The equipment is typically available immediately, cutting lead-time for delivery by months. Even with this simple value proposition, saving time and money with used equipment, many manufacturers have never considered used equipment.

Perhaps you are worried about the risks of buying used production equipment. Risks could be:
  • Regulatory
  • Validation
  • Project
  • Supply
  • Performance
Talk to Perry Process Equipment to put your mind at rest. We have been supplying high quality used process equipment for 80 years and can substantially mitigate or eliminate your concerns.

Call one of our Sales Managers on 01325 315111 or email us: info@perryprocess.co.uk

You can further reduce the risks by working with reputable equipment dealers that only source equipment from other reputable pharmaceutical and chemical companies and develop strong relationships with original equipment manufacturers. A dealer with strong relationships within the manufacturing industry as well as with the OEMs means that a buyer is truly getting high-quality equipment that will impress customers. Leveraging the inventory available at a used equipment dealer can enable one’s new business development team to reliably source additional equipment required to win new projects. The equipment dealer should also be able to provide affordable back-up equipment fast or equipment for increased capacity when a customer demands additional supply. Most of the “risk” associated with the purchase of used equipment is easily managed by the in-house expertise possessed by manufacturers and contract manufacturing organisations (CMO), allowing firms to take advantage of the simple value proposition provided by used manufacturing equipment: saving time and money.

For over 80 years, Perry Group of Companies has been a trusted name in the pharmaceutical, chemical, food, plastics, paper, sugar, rubber, fishmeal and mining industries. With thousands of pieces of inventory in stock, Perry is dedicated to providing customers with quality used equipment, available immediately at competitive prices. Read All About: Reactors

What is a Reactor?

A reactor is a device which is used to contain controlled chemical reactions. Reactions take place inside the Reactor, in conditions which can be monitored and controlled for safety and efficiency. These types of Reactors are used in the production of chemicals such as components of pharmaceutical compounds, and they can operate in several different ways. Reactors are stirred by rotating impellers for blending, dispersing or promoting heat transfer. In simple terms a Reactor mixes two products together to make a third, different product.
Stock NumberL0999-05 & L0999-06
Reactors can be designed as either tanks or pipes, depending on the needs, and they can vary in size considerably. For example, small bench-top chemical reactor designs are intended for use in labs while large tanks can be used to make chemicals on an industrial scale. The design also includes a variety of features which can be used to control conditions inside the reactor. Continuous chemical Reactors operate continuously, as long as the materials needed for the reaction are supplied. These are used to create a steady supply of a needed chemical. Continuous Reactors are commonly used in the manufacture of industrial chemicals, when the need for a chemical is high and very consistent.

View a video of a 3000L reactor: L0874-09

 Perry stock Reactors:

Perry stock 100s of Reactors on site ranging from 5l to 100,000l. Reactors can be jacketed for heat transfer, agitated for proper mixing and rated for high pressure and temperature. A Reactor with no agitation system is termed as a "Reactor Body". Another type of Reactor is a Kettle, which is a Reactor built for no internal pressure or vacuum. The construction of material depends upon the corrosive nature and other chemical properties of the reactants. Materials can include: glass (used for lining), hastelloy, high alloy and stainless steel. Reactors can be used in a variety of applications including chemical processing, food and beverage production, paper and pulp processing, biopharmaceutical, pharmaceutical and plastic processing.

We have many standard sizes and designs in stock, for immediate delivery.

Stock Number: L1048-01
Reactors can have excellent resistance to corrosion, smooth non-stick properties and non-catalytic inertness. They are designed for a high versatility in multiproduct applications, or are specialized to optimise a specific processing requirement.

We have recently moved a great deal of high specification and quality Reactors from two Global Pharmaceutical Manufacturers based in Europe, to our site. As we have been buying and selling used equipment for over 80 years, you can trust our expertise.

UK Chemical Industry Aims for 2030

With jobs hanging in the balance at Ineos, Grangemouth last week, how secure is the chemical industry in the UK at present? The UK Government plan to grow the chemical sector by 50%, over the next 17 years, by strengthening supply chains so that technologies and products are sourced in the UK.

If the Ineos, Grangemouth site had closed, it would have decreased Scotland’s manufacturing industry by 8% and it would have indirectly affected 10,000 jobs. The refinery supplies 70% of the fuel used at filling stations throughout Scotland and also supplies fuel to the North of England and Northern Ireland, so petrol and diesel supplies, had it closed, would have had to have been sourced elsewhere.

The UK Chemical industry represents around 12% of value added in manufacturing, equivalent to 1.5% of GDP. The Chemicals industry is one of the largest and most diverse manufacturing industries in the UK. It is a vital trade supply chain to UK manufacturing from Aerospace to Pharmaceuticals, as well as retail manufacturing from Food & Drink to Personal Care. Productivity in the Chemicals industry has increased by 69% since 1999-2009 [Cogent, 2013]. This industry is comprised of commodity chemicals, speciality/fine chemicals and consumer products, and directly employs over 140,000 people in high value jobs and indirectly supports around three times as many.

Large scale manufacturing locations often have clusters of manufacturing units. In the UK, there are four main locations for commodity chemical manufacture, including Teesside as part of the Northeast of England Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC). Some 50% of the UK’s petrochemical and commodity chemicals are produced by the NEPIC industry cluster companies on Teesside. Perry Process Equipment is a member of NEPIC and works with chemical manufacturers within this group.

In a new strategy for the chemical sector, Vince Cable, Business Secretary and Michael Fallon, Business Minister met chemical industry business leaders last week to drive forward plans to grow the industry by 50% by 2030.
The Business Secretary said:

The chemical industry in the UK is already a leading exporter but there are considerable future growth opportunities if we can create the right conditions. Key to this is a strengthening of our supply chains so chemical technologies and products are sourced in this country rather than overseas. By working together with business on a long-term vision, we can build confidence to invest, grow and create British jobs in one of our most important sectors.”

Amongst the companies who Vince Cable met with, was the chemical processing company Thomas Swan who will lead on supply chain development work. Since the late 90s, Perry Process Equipment Ltd has frequently supplied Thomas Swan with process equipment to their manufacturing site. By sourcing equipment from Perry Process, Thomas Swan has made significant savings. They have also recycled their surplus equipment by selling it to Perry Process Equipment Ltd to be refurbished and reused within the industry.

Perry Process Equipment Ltd has been working with chemical companies around the globe, for over eighty years, to provide quality machinery at a fraction of the cost compared to new. By buying used machinery, these companies have reduced waste, reduced usage of raw material and more importantly have reduced the associated emissions generated in the manufacturing process. All of this has improved their green credentials as well as saving them valuable time and money.

With the chemicals sector aiming for 50 % growth by 2030, Perry will continue to help the current UK chemical manufacturing sites strengthen and grow.

A Guide to Buying Used Process Equipment

Download our complete FREE Buyers Guide
Buying used or second hand process equipment can provide significant cost savings against purchasing new, but many people are deterred by the plethora of myths that surround the industry. This article takes each of these myths in turn and exposes them, so that you and your company don’t miss out on the savings that can be achieved. This can run into thousands, even hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Myth 1: There is no guarantee that used process equipment will work:
Unfortunately, you often get what you pay for although a reputable dealer will undertake many more checks before they even get the process equipment into their stock and even more before it is sold on to you. A good dealer should also allow you to inspect before you buy, if you can’t make it to their site then ask for a video of the equipment to be sent to you or send a third party inspector to confirm it is in working order.

Myth 2: You can’t buy spare parts for a used machine:
This commonly held belief is simply untrue.  Additional parts can be sourced for any machine. If a part can’t be obtained from the OEM it may be possible to locate it from a different used machine. Alternatively, a good dealer will have relationships with engineering companies that can make the parts from the original drawings of the unit to its original specification.

Myth 3: There will be no documentation available:
Most used equipment is still accompanied by its relevant technical documentation and user manual. If it is not available the OEMs can supply them and a good dealer should be able to organise this for you.  Often you will find that the manufacturer’s warranty is still available, or there may be an option to extend this. Again, a good dealer will always be able to organise this for you. Finally, make sure your dealer provides you with documentation concerning the industry and processes the equipment has previously operated in. This information is required in order to meet 34E requirements for material handling.

Myth 4: The process equipment will not meet your requirements or current legislation:
Sometimes this can be true for an older piece of equipment, but even if this is the situation it can be modified to ensure it does. Most dealers will offer this service in-house or will work with the OEM or an engineering company to provide it.

To view the other four myths and tips click here and download a copy of the complete Guide to Buying Used Process Equipment. From there, you can also download our latest catalogue, brochure and other literature.

If you would like to discuss any of the points made above, please call to speak to a member of our team who would be happy to answer your queries. Tel: +44 (0)1325 315111.
