A History of Cometec Heat Exchangers

Cometec was founded in 1988 in Linsengericht, Germany as part of the Carbone Lorraine Group. Cometec was the leading international specialist in the construction of Tantalum equipment and was a company within the Chemical Equipment Division.

Stock number L1009-16
The Carbone Lorraine Group, along with the Cometec branch, changed its name to Mersen in 2010. Mersen has been close to its customers in Germany from 1897 to China since 2007, with manufacturing facilities in over 40 countries.

Mersen’s Tantalum Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers are designed and manufactured for use within in high-corrosive environments in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Tantalum is a competitive alternative to glass-lined equipment. Mersen produces high-end Tantalum Heat Exchangers in its dedicated 3,000 m2 workshop in Germany and 6,000 m2 in the USA.
To utilise the unique chemical and physical properties of Tantalum require know-how, specific equipment and highly trained people are required. A long experience in design and fabrication of Tantalum equipment combined with an international material sourcing policy allow Mersen to bring quality and cost-effective solutions to the marketplace.
Tantalum has high levels of corrosion-resistance to:
  • Hydrochloric acid
  • Nitric acid
  • Phosphoric acid
  • Strong organic acids
  • Bromine
  • and associated compounds.
A shell and tube Heat Exchanger has an external cylinder called a shell with internal tubes that run the length of the shell. There are tube sheets on each end of the tubes sealing the shell around the tubes and there are covers on each end called heads which can come in several configurations. The basic principal of operation is that one fluid flows through the tube and another fluid flows around the tubes; the large number of tubes in the bundles offer extensive contact surfaces which facilitate quick and efficient thermal transfer. The fluid inside the tubes can flow in a single pass or multiple passes using baffles in the heads.

We sell used Lödige Mixers

Perry Process Equipment Ltd stock equipment from highly regarded manufacturers, including Lödige Process Technology.

Brothers Lödige Maschinenbau GmbH, the inventor of the Ploughshare® Mixer, is a leading global provider of equipment and subsystems for industrial mixing technologies. Lödige has been manufacturing high quality equipment since 1938 and has offices and manufacturing sites worldwide. The equipment manufactured by Lödige is cross-industry and high-quality.  They provide sub-systems for process engineering applications in the areas of mixing, granulation, coating, drying and allied processes.

Lödige Mixers:

Mixing is the combining of at least two distinguishable substances to form a homogeneous mixture. The starting state of materials may differ. They could be gaseous, liquid or solid in their physical states.
The mixing equipment will form either a static or dynamic system. Static mixers are permanently installed systems, where product flows through the mixer. The mixing effect is exclusively due to the swirling flow through permanently installed items. A pre-condition for the use of static mixers is the pumping ability of the starting materials.

One form of dynamic mixer is the free-fall mixer. A typical example of a free-fall mixer is the classic cement mixer with its rotating drum and rotating mixing elements built into the mixer chamber. By mixing the elements, the starting materials are selectively accelerated and moved relative to each other. Depending on the design of the mixing elements, different states of motion are possible.

A very popular mixer is the Ploughshare® mixer introduced into the processing industry by Lödige.

The peripheral speed and geometric shape of Ploughshare® shovels, rotating close to the wall of a horizontal, cylindrical drum, lift the mixing components from the product bed into the open mixing area and scoop material from the wall of the drum counteracting the centrifugal force.  A fluid bed generated mechanically in this way, whereby all of the product is constantly involved in the mixing process, ensures maximum mixing intensity at even the highest feed rates and shortest residence times.  The specially shaped mixing elements ensure best product conveyance.

Choppers can be installed in the mixing drum as optional equipment to disperse agglomerates and provide controlled granulation during the mixing process.

We Sell Used Lödige Mixers:

Useful Guide To Selling Your Surplus Process Equipment

We've put together some brief points to consider when selling your surplus process equipment. These points should hopefully help you to gain the maximum return on your assets.

  1. Documentation. If possible, sell your equipment with its technical documentation, service history, drawings etc. as this is what most buyers will look for.
  2. Spares. If you have any spares, include them with the equipment.  This will be a big bonus for anyone looking to purchase the unit, knowing they won't need to buy any at an additional cost.
  3. Removal. Make sure that the removal of equipment is done correctly to avoid damage to your equipment.
  4. Show it off. Get some photographs to show the equipment as it is now, to give you a realistic price for its condition as it is.  Take internal and external photographs, nameplates, inlet and outlet points etc.
  5. Trade In. Are you selling in order to upgrade? Perry offer the option to trade your surplus assets against the cost of purchasing an item from our stock.

Why Customers Keep Coming Back To Perry Process Equipment Ltd

Perry Process Equipment’s customers keep coming back time and time again for their equipment needs.

Over 50% of our sales each month come from returning customers. We always advise our customers of the many benefits of buying used process equipment and we have received several comments from them. They state that we are the best supplier on price, stock availability and quality, turnaround time and in-house services.

We have thousands of items in stock at our facility and we have many sites globally, so whatever you need we are here to help you! The advantages of buying used equipment from Perry Process Equipment Ltd have recently been highlighted by one of our repeat customers, Lionel Hitchen (Essential Oils). According to their Engineering Manager, “the decision to use a second hand solution was driven by two main considerations -- availability and cost. In terms of availability, it is a big advantage if you can pick up something similar to what you need in a short period of time,” he explained. “Generally speaking if we were going down the new plant route we would need to draw up specifications and tender documents for vessel manufacturers, and then invite tenders and so forth. This would normally have a minimum twenty week lead time.”

Ribbon Blender - Refurbished In-House
Another of our loyal customers advised that they return to Perry Process Equipment because of our in-house services. We have refurbished and sold a 1,500Ltr stainless steel Ribbon Blender to Sticky Baits, UK. The unit was inspected before refurbishment began. They explained, “The Ribbon Blender was refurbished to an exceptionally high standard and was barely recognisable from the Blender that we first viewed. Exceptional service and work from start to finish.” Perry has the in-house expertise to fully refurbish any unit from our stock. All refurbishment work is completed by our own Engineering Specialist Team, at our Newton Aycliffe facility which makes the turnaround time minimal.

Perry Process Equipment Ltd was also at hand when they both had surplus equipment to be sold. We purchased their surplus process equipment with cash and dealt with dismantling and shipping.

Read All About: Mixers

What is a Mixer?

There are many different types of industrial mixers, which are also referred to as Blenders, Agitators or Turbulizers. They are frequently found in food factories, chemical and pharmaceutical laboratories and in full scale process facilities. Most industrial mixers bear little resemblance to regular home mixers as industrial models can typically weigh several tonnes and have complex automation systems.

Click play to view a video from our YouTube Channel.

Many industrial processes involve mixing or blending materials. The raw materials blended also take many forms from wet to dry, low viscosity liquids to high viscosity powders, pastes and inks. It may be appropriate to use a double arm mixer for applications like dough mixing where a kneading type of action is required. Where the application requires a gentle mixing action, a double cone blender may be ideal, ensuring a homogeneous air-free mix. These industrial Mixers can be useful for the production of foods, adhesives, and pharmaceutical products, among others.
Another good example of the industrial application of mixers is the ribbon blender used for the mixing of small particle sized ingredients. It is also important that all of the ingredients are mixed evenly. The mixer has a central shaft with mixing blades angled in various orientations that look like double-helix ribbons, and gives the blender the ability to move parts of the mixture in different directions at the same time. This ensures that all ingredients are effectively and completely blended.

Ribbon blenders are mainly used in food and pharmaceutical manufacturing applications in large batch sizes. They can have a horizontal construction, where the shaft and blade are horizontal in the container, or the shaft and blade can be in a vertical position.

Some mixers may have additional features such as multiple chambers and chutes to handle different kinds of loads, and users can configure the mixers specific applications using a wide range of automation and controls.
