Buying Used Equipment Tips
There are several ways to select used process
equipment for use in a plant, facility or factory. By buying used
equipment, your company can save money and have access to a broad
range of processes. Choosing the best used process equipment is a matter of
buying equipment that comes from a reputable source, is in up-to-date
condition, meets safety standards, and is cost effective for the specific task
it will perform.
One should buy used process equipment from a reputable seller,
especially when dealing with an overseas company. It is important to conduct
thorough research on any company that is considered, find out what guarantees
exist for faulty equipment, and speak directly with an employee from that
company. Buyers should also consider the condition of the equipment, as it’s
important to use equipment that is in up-to-date condition and is not damaged. Select
only equipment that has been tested as working well. Read our article The 8 Myths of Used Process Equipment, which eradicates the plethora of myths that surround the industry.
Second-hand equipment is classified into two groups:
Refurbished Equipment: Equipment that has been restored to factory
standards, effectively allowing the machinery to be as good as new. What is
different is that the items are available at a reduced cost and carry a
warranty that is of a shorter duration than a warranty on a similar piece of
new equipment. Used or As-Is Equipment: Equipment that is sold without undergoing refurbishment. This simply means that the items have not been restored to factory standards. Often, the second-hand equipment is still in excellent working order, but is not sold with any type of warranty. Used items that have not undergone refurbishing are often the least expensive option, and may be very attractive to a business with very little money to spend.
