Read About: Tanks

What is a Tank?

The term tank usually refers to any vessel that is used for mixing chemicals and other liquids or just for storage. A mixing tank is a container that is used to blend several components together. In most manufacturing facilities, a mixing tank is used to prepare materials that will be used in production. Large containers of raw materials are placed into a large mixing tank and are blended into a smooth mix that can be used to produce a plethora of materials. In a bakery environment, a mixing vessel will contain flour, yeast and water, all of which are taken in specific amounts from various supply systems and placed into the larger vessel to be mixed.

The common characteristics of a tank include vertical orientation or horizontal orientation, rating for high pressure or atmospheric pressure, agitated for mixing or purely storage. They can be glass-lined for harsh, corrosive chemical storage or mixing. Glass-lined tanks are used to store or mix chemicals that corrode alloy surfaces.

The material that a mixing tank is manufactured from can range from polymers to steel of all types. Typically, within the manufacturing industry, the steel material used is stainless steel. In certain applications fiberglass/fiberglass reinforced plastic, plastic, aluminium, metal alloys as well as glass-lined can be used. Stainless steel is often used in the creation of a mixing tank due to the ease of clean-up as well as the smooth surface of the product. Copper is sometimes used in the making of a mixing tank, however, due to copper's tendency to react adversely to certain chemicals it is used only in specific applications.

USETEC, formerly known as RESALE, is an annual exhibition for the used machinery & equipment industry held in Cologne, Germany.  This year it’s being held from the 22nd – 24th April 2013.

We have been exhibiting at this event for many years. It’s a chance for us to meet face to face with customers as well as show them our range of products and services.  Many visitors and exhibitors attend each year so we’ve built up some close working relationships from attending USETEC.

This year our stand is situated in Hall 6, Stand E-108/F-109.  Julie Morris, our Sales Manager for Germany, will be at our stand for the whole event and our Managing Director, Darren Bentham is going to be there for the first few days.  If you would like to meet them there, get in touch to make an appointment.

We’d love to have your comments if you’ve either exhibited here before or if you will be exhibiting or visiting this year. There are some things you simply cannot do online like shake hands or speak face to face, so come along to our stand so we can meet you.

Read About: Reactors

What is a Reactor?

A reactor is a device which is used to contain controlled chemical reactions. Reactions take place inside the reactor, in conditions which can be monitored and controlled for safety and efficiency. These types of reactors are used in the production of chemicals such as components of pharmaceutical compounds, and they can operate in several different ways. Reactors are stirred by rotating impellers for blending, dispersing or promoting heat transfer.

Reactors can be designed as either tanks or pipes, depending on the needs, and they can vary in size considerably. Small benchtop chemical reactor designs are intended for use in labs, for example, while large tanks can be used to make chemicals on an industrial scale. The design also includes a variety of features which can be used to control conditions inside the reactor.

Continuous chemical reactors operate continuously, as long as the materials needed for the reaction are supplied. These are used to create a steady supply of a needed chemical. Continuous reactors are commonly used in the manufacture of industrial chemicals, when the need for a chemical is high and very consistent.

Reactors at Perry:

Perry stock 100s of Reactors on site ranging from 5l to 100,000l. Reactors can be jacketed for heat transfer, agitated for proper mixing and rated for high pressure and temperature. A reactor with no agitation system is termed as a "reactor body". Another type of reactor is a kettle, which is a reactor built for no internal pressure or vacuum. The construction of material depends upon the corrosive nature and other chemical properties of the reactants. Materials can include: glass (used for lining), hastelloy, high alloy and stainless steel. Reactors can be used in a variety of applications including chemical processing, food and beverage production, paper and pulp processing, biopharmaceutical, pharmaceutical and plastic processing.

Reactors can have excellent resistance to corrosion, smooth non-stick properties and non-catalytic inertness. They are designed for a high versatility in multiproduct applications, or are specialized to optimise a specific processing requirement. We have many standard sizes and designs in stock, for immediate delivery.

2012 Year Overview

We are happy to announce that, even in an economic downturn, Perry Process Equipment Ltd had a successful business year in 2012. We had an increase in profits, hit our sales targets and added new staff, high quality stock and sites. We have also created new relationships within the industry to strengthen our position as the largest global dealer of quality used process equipment.

Highlights of 2012:

1. The Perry Group celebrated 80 years of business - Since 1932, we have been at the centre of the used process equipment and machinery world. Today we have one of the world's most extensive inventories of used equipment, with offices and agents worldwide, meaning that we can fulfil your equipment needs.

2. Richard Driver celebrated 25 years of service at Perry - On 16th November 1987, Richard Driver, Sales Manager began working for the Perry Group over in the USA. Three years later he returned to his native UK to establish the first European office, known as Perry Process Equipment Ltd.

3. Perry appoints new Sales Manager, Dan Smith - Dan joined Perry in August 2011, as a Sales Assistant. He quickly found his feet in our UK office being promoted to Sales Manager in October 2012. He is now responsible for managing sales in France whilst working closely with our Plant Co-ordinator.

4. Perry looks to the future - Perry understands that apprenticeships have the potential to create a wealth of new talent within UK businesses, whilst giving young people the work experience and training that they need to grow within the industry. This year, we took on two young apprentices, Paige Brittain in administration and Sam Burdett-Cann in engineering. We also employed two foreign undergraduates, from Germany and Turkey, as interns over the summer period. This gave them valuable experience within our industry. By virtue of this, we won the "Employer of the Year 2012" award from S&D training.

5. Perry’s training programme – Perry understands that the success of its business depends on having a good training program for its employees. Everyone is encouraged to partake. Even our MD is studying French to enable better business connections with our French customers and partners. In 2012, our Junior Buyer, Greg Lyons successfully passed the BTEC National Certificate in Operations and Maintenance Engineering. Currently, Nigel Thornton is attending Darlington College to gain his BTEC Certificate. All engineering and warehousing staff have completed recognised national qualifications, so that our standard of service to our customers is kept at a high standard.

6. Perry raised money for Breast Cancer Campaign - On Friday 26th October 2012, Perry raised funds for Breast Cancer Care. Perry staff participated in Wear It Pink Day, which involved pink attire and wearing superhero masks. Even our website went PINK for the day. We held a buffet and raffle, managing to raise a total of £277 in-house.

7. Perry exhibits globally - Every year we try to exhibit and attend the main exhibitions appropriate for our industry. In 2012, we exhibited at USETEC, Germany and PAM, UK and we have also attended ACHEMA, Germany gaining new contacts and introducing our business to new customers.

8. Perry teaches the next generation - In June, staff at Perry Process welcomed a class of Year 6 students from the local Aycliffe Village Primary School to our Newton Aycliffe site. The children had been studying science in the classroom but their visit to Perry Process allowed them to see how the experiments they performed translated into real-world situations.

9. Perry expands with new warehouse facilities - At the end of 2012, Perry Process acquired new warehouse facilities, totalling 40’000sqft, to stock our high quality equipment purchases. This recent growth within our business creates a positive outlook for 2013 and means that with an increase in stock, our customers can benefit. We are currently moving a great deal of high specification and high quality equipment from two Global Pharmaceutical Manufacturers based in Europe, to our site.

10. Last but not least – Perry starts blogging. In February 2012, we began our Perry Process blog to inform our loyal customers of important events and our latest deals.

We would like to thank our customers for their business and we are looking forward to working with everyone in 2013.

Bonne Chance, from all at Perry Process!
